Quick Weight Loss Diets – 7 Basic Suggestions That Cost You Nothing

You’ll find a large number of quick weight loss diets floating around on the web and on the offline world. Regrettably, a significant number of them send folks on wild goose chases that take a great deal of effort and rarely works as excellent as promised. The ones that work as well as expected tend to cost a particular amount of money. Even worse, many of these weight loss plans will not only drain your pocketbook, but they also don’t work. With that in mind, here are some basic tips that can assist you lose weight naturally without losing any cash:

1. Do not skip meals. This might appear like it goes against the logic of fast weight loss diets, since I’m convincing you to eat much more, but the truth is that skipping meals really make you gain a lot far more weight. When you starve your self, the body’s natural defense reacts by storing additional fat to prepare itself inside the future, which indicates the next thing you eat will likely be converted to pure fat.

2. Maintain a typical schedule and stick to it. Try to resist cravings and eat only at appropriate times. Food binging each and every time you feel like it could throw your diet for a loop and confuse your metabolism. Being consistent lets your body adjust to new diets to ensure that it might be toned.

three. Eat in moderation. This works in tandem with the first tip. The basic concept behind most quick weight loss diets isn’t by means of fasting or extreme restriction of available foods, but in moderating your food intake. As a general rule of thumb, it is possible to eat what you would like, but only when you require to and only as significantly as you need to have. Eating a scoop of ice cream here and there’s not bad, as lengthy as you do not do it by the pint and not everyday.

4. Drink lots of water. Liquids are an vital part of all diet plans. If achievable, you should drink one glass of water every two hours. This helps in quite a few ways. Initial, it makes you feel fuller so you won’t be tempted to eat when not hungry. Second, it helps your digestion and aids in flushing out unwanted elements and toxins from your body.

5. Add beans into your weekly diet. Beans tend to be efficient in curbing hunger pangs, but are less fattening than other protein-rich food. Beans will also assist in digestion, and depending on how you prepare it, can taste as very good as meat.

6. Add much more vegetables to your diet. You do not will need to be a vegan, but there’s no disadvantage to leaning towards additional vegetarian-oriented food. Aside from the benefits in terms of weight loss, they can also support inside your overall health.

7. Last but not the least, exercise. Going to the gym and signing up for an extensive bodybuilding regimen is unnecessary, all you have to do is incorporate much more physical activities in your every day routine. A great quick weight loss diet will support you lose weight, but with out a good physical workout, your body will merely adjust itself and you will gain weight again.

Weight-Loss Surgery May Ease Incontinence in Women

THURSDAY, Jan. 13 (HealthDay News) -- In an encouraging sign for severely obese women who suffer from incontinence, a new Australian study says that many gain control over urination after undergoing gastric-band weight-loss surgery.

"This could be an additional benefit for females undergoing the procedure," said Dr. Weranja K.B. Ranasinghe, the study's lead author.

"A number of large studies have showed the link between obesity and urinary incontinence, especially in females," Ranasinghe said. "Gastric banding surgery is being used more commonly as an option for weight loss in the obese population, with good effect. But very little is known about the urological issues following gastric banding, so we attempted to investigate this."

In laparoscopic gastric banding, one of the most common forms of weight-loss surgery, surgeons place a band around the top of the stomach, creating a small pouch, which reduces the amount of food people can eat before feeling full.

Obesity is a growing health issue worldwide, increasing the risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer. More than half of the people in Australia are overweight or obese, said Ranasinghe, who works in the urology department at Austin Hospital in Melbourne. Also, about one in four people has some form of urinary incontinence, which may be attributable to obesity.

For the study, published in the January issue of the British Journal of Urology International, the researchers analyzed surveys completed by 142 women (average age, 48) and 34 men (average age, 53) who underwent gastric band surgery over a decade at a clinic in Australia. The participants were asked to recall their urinary and erectile dysfunction symptoms before and after surgery.

Sixty-five percent of the women said they had incontinence before to the surgery, as did about a quarter of the men.

The high numbers suggest, but don't prove, that obesity may play a role. "In females, it is thought that the excess weight around the abdominal region increases the pressure on the bladder, causing urinary incontinence, especially when coughing, laughing or sneezing," Ranasinghe said. "In males, this is a more complex mechanism and is poorly understood."

On average, men and women lost about 50 pounds after gastric banding, the researchers found.

Overall, incontinence improved after surgery among the women, but they suffered from more "urge incontinence" -- urination that usually occurs after a sudden urge to urinate. The overall improvement may have occurred because weight loss reduces pressure on the urinary tract, Ranasinghe said.

Symptoms of incontinence in men did not improve after surgery, the study found.

And though 83 percent of the men reported erectile dysfunction before the procedure, overall they said they had more sexual problems afterward.

Ranasinghe said the study numbers for men were small, making it hard to determine if weight loss actually worsened sexual functioning. Also, improvement may take time. The long-term benefits of weight loss, including improvement in blood vessels, are thought to reduce erectile dysfunction, Ranasinghe said.

The study did not analyze sexual sensitivity in the women.

Dr. Natan Bar-Chama, director of male reproductive medicine and surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, said the study's value is limited because it relies on people's recollections.

However, the findings regarding women and incontinence are consistent with other research, he said.

As for men, it's known that weight loss helps improve erectile dysfunction, he said, although the specific effects of weight-loss surgery still need to be studied.

Can Weight Reduction Reduce Sleep Apnea?

You may have heard about the rumor about how weight loss can help in reducing sleep apnea. Actually, it is not a rumor. It is a proven case! A recent study showed that obese men who started a regimen for losing weight experienced a significant reduction in sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a disorder common among overweight individuals. This is when their breathing is interrupted during their sleep due to a collapsed or blocked airway. Most individuals who experience this disorder have to sleep with a CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure just to insure healthy breathing and prevent other associated symptoms.

Now, rather than using a CPAP, scientists have found that weight loss is actually the best and most practical way in eliminating sleep apnea. During the study, participants who had the most severe cases benefited the most from the regimen for losing weight as well. They did not only get better figures from the scale, they also started having more restful and peaceful sleep. Great for their loved ones whom they sleep with too, right?

Anyway, overweight people are often more prone to having sleep apnea because the physical movement of air through their lungs and trachea are affected by their body fats. As you already know, the US has an alarming obesity problem and therefore has equally alarming cases of sleep apnea, too. The great news is that battling obesity can cure sleep apnea. The greater thing is that it also provides other fantastic health benefits such as reducing risks of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and asthma. It even decreases the risk of catching influenza! See? Keeping a healthy body weight is perhaps the single most necessary thing a person can do to improve his or her health.

Now, the problem is how do you do this when the lifestyle you pursue in the modern society makes it almost impossible to attain weight loss? Imagine people working 12 hours a day, commuting 2 hours on each, eating processed foods and spending most of their lives under artificial light indoors. Who could say that staying fit is easy? What's easy is to pinpoint is this: the only solution to attaining and keeping a healthy weight is to change your lifestyle.

If you truly want to be healthy and say goodbye to obesity as well as its other symptoms such as sleep apnea, you must live a different life. Eat healthier food, spend more outside rather than your cubicle, and enjoy nature more.

The Secret of Permanent Weight Loss

Most people do one of two things when faced with a weight problem. We look for ways to by-pass the problem by looking for quick fix solutions. Alternatively, we repress the problem by trying to ignore it or put the blame on things that we claim are beyond our control such as genetics, hectic schedule etc

Both the above happen because we lack real deep understanding of “why” we want to achieve a particular weight goal. This “why” is made up of 2 parts namely the utilitarian and the non utilitarian parts. The utilitarian part of weight loss is pretty clear such as looking good, feeling energetic, being healthy and living a long life.

The Non-Utilitarian Part of Weight Loss

The non utilitarian part of weight loss may not be that clear at first. These includes love, truth, compassion and joy. Now most of us would probably be asking what has love, truth, compassion and joy got to do with sustainable weight loss. Looking at it superficially we probably will not see the relationship but if we take the trouble to find a deeper understanding, things start to become clearer.

Love and Weight Loss

Lets take love for instance. We all know that we cannot give what we do not have and this also applies for love. So we must love ourselves and that means taking care of ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. If deep down we do not genuinely love ourselves, this may become a potential barrier to correct weight loss. The earlier blog on the 4 levels of love elaborates this point well.

Understanding Weight Loss

Truth is another area that is largely neglected because understanding truth requires effort. Henry Ford rightfully pointed out that “thinking is the most difficult task, that is why so few people do it”. There is tremendous benefit in a deep understanding about the truth of correct weight loss because it leads to effortless self-discipline which is sustainable. For example a 1-year-old has to be prevented from sticking his finger into the wall power point because he lacks an understanding of its risk. However an adult displays effortless self-discipline because of deeper understanding of the risks of sticking his finger into the wall power point. The 1-year-old may not like being prevented because it is an externally induced discipline but this is not the case for the adult. The fundamental difference is externally induced discipline is a form of prison which is usually not sustainable but effortless self-discipline that grows from deep understanding is a form of freedom and is usually sustainable. So if we want to make self-discipline more effortless and therefore more sustainable, spend some time understanding the truth about correct weight loss.

Compassion

If we have compassion than we are able to place ourself in the other person’s position. We can feel the emotional and financial strain that our loved ones may have to go through should our health be compromised due to being overweight. We can feel the sadness that our children feel because we cannot run and play with them.

There is a kind of joy in accomplishing a task through our own effort which no quick fix or repression can ever bring. We start believing and respecting ourself. There is also joy in knowing that by our efforts, we are becoming a source of comfort for our loved ones by being healthy and energetic.

Make a Life, Not a Living

For some of us, just knowing the utilitarian part of why we need to lose weight is adequate to get into action and maintain them. However for the rest of us knowing the utilitarian and the non utilitarian parts help in moving us to action. The utilitarian part helps us make a living but it is the non utilitarian part that helps us make a life.

Correct Weight for Height

A lot of people ask what their weight should be, based on their height. People believe that for a given height, there should be a corresponding correct body weight. Unfortunately, there is no way of assessing an ideal weight for a given height. But one can very easily assess, measure and achieve an ideal body shape for a given height.

Weight Loss is Misleading

Most people know that all their weight loss should be fat loss. Yet most people do not realize that all of their weight loss may not necessarily be attributed to fat loss. When one loses weight, some of the weight loss could be attributed to fat loss. The rest of it could be attributed to muscle loss and water loss. Muscle and water loss is of no use to someone wanting a better or well defined body. Muscle loss causes the metabolism to be sluggish and sets one up for rebound weight gain. Water loss is temporary as the body will very quickly recoup water losses.

The Obsession with the Weighing Scales

The weighing scales rule the lives of countless people. A lot of people pay homage to the weight scales first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, the obsession with the weight scales leads to a lack of fulfillment. This is because monitoring weight alone can never lead to a beautiful or well-defined body.

Weight Loss or a Well Defined Body Shape

Everyone is able to appreciate a perfect body when they see one. Be it the hourglass shape of a woman or the “V” shaped body of a man, one is able to appreciate a beautiful and well-defined body. While we have a visual impression of what a beautiful body should look, we are not thought of how to correctly measure it.

Weight Scales is a Flawed Means to Measure a Well Defined Body

We are brought up thinking that the only way to get the body of our dreams is by losing weight. Unfortunately, the weight scale is a faulty tool for achieving this goal. As mentioned earlier, there is no way of knowing what proportion of your weight loss is attributed to fat loss.

Measuring the Waist to Hip Ratio for Women

A simpler yet crude means of assessing a well-defined body for a woman is by measuring her waist to hip ratio (WHR). A waist to hip ratio of 0.7 is considered to be the ideal hourglass shape.

Measuring the Shoulder to Waist Ratio for Men

A crude assessment for measuring a “V” shaped body for men is by measuring the shoulder to hip ratio. A shoulder to waist ratio of 0.8 yields an attractive “V” shaped body.

Measuring % Body Fat

The most accurate means of measuring a well-defined body is by measuring % body fat. This can be done with a pair of calipers. It essentially measures what percentage of your body weight is fat. As your % body fat reduces, you can be rest assured that you are moving towards your dream body.

A man can have a very attractive body at 10-14% body fat. Most men will start showing off a 6-pack at 12% body fat and below. A woman can have a very attractive and sexy body at 20 % body fat and below. A woman can start showing off her 6-pack at 16% body fat and below.

What is the Correct Weight for Your Height

As mentioned earlier, blindly monitoring weight loss does not yield a well-defined body. Using weight loss to achieve a well-defined body can be likened to climbing a ladder all the way to the top only to realize that it is placed against the wrong wall.

As such, there is no such thing as a correct weight for a given height. This is a wrong measurement and will not yield the desired results. Instead people should focus on measuring the body ratios for a crude assessment of body shape. Alternatively, an accurate assessment could be attained by measuring % body fat. The ratios and the % body fat ,work independently of the height and are applicable for a short person as well as a tall person.

Weight Loss Success Tip - Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Every person is different: their goals, their bodies, their health requirements, their tastes, their lives, etc, etc, etc. Comparing ourselves to others does not do us any favors-nor does it help the other person we are comparing ourselves to! Let's learn to take stock of our situation and figure out where we want to go from here...independent of where others are and where others think we should go. This is a good philosophy for every aspect of our lives including our weight loss goals!

This has been a huge challenge for me...one that I share with many people on oh, so many fronts. It seems that we never feel we are smart enough, talented enough, funny enough, rich enough, pretty enough, and of course not nearly thin enough.

This "not enough" feeling...no matter what the feeling is about...is a feeling of lack...of not measuring up. How do we get this sort of feeling? By comparing ourselves to someone else who we BELIEVE is better or "more than" we are.

The truth is we have no way of really knowing what that other person has going on in their lives. As it turns out almost everyone has a feeling of being less than-about SOMETHING in their lives. Even many supermodels, people who are paid lots of money because of their looks, believe they are not beautiful enough. Gee whiz, if they aren't beautiful enough, what hope do we mere mortals have?

We are born knowing we are beautiful, that we are enough...babies radiate that and as adults we feel and see it in them. But somewhere along the path of growing up, we got the message that we weren't enough...this isn't about blaming anyone for giving us that message...it is just about acknowledging that somehow we internalized the message. If we want to regain our health then we have to change that message-no matter how it got there in the first place-and we don't change the message by looking outside ourselves...we must look inside...we must change our mindset to achieve weight loss.

If your goal is to be a healthier person in 2010, then it is important that you keep that intention and take steps to achieve it...and the first and most important steps are in your mind, not in finding the right diet, pill, or exercise routine.

In our competitive society it is common for people to attach a number to that success...losing "x" pounds, reaching a goal weight "Z", even reaching that weight faster than anyone else. This is looking outside yourself to judge your success.

Instead of buying into that notion, focus on YOU. Why do you want to be healthier? What does being healthier look like for you? What will this enable you to do? How will you feel? Develop a mental picture of what you will look like healthier...not what some chart says you should weigh...and see yourself doing the things that are important to you. See yourself living your life, enjoying the people in your life, the activities that you enjoy.

Now as you move forward, judge your progress based on YOU...not someone else. Celebrate when you feel your energy is higher, when you notice you can do something you couldn't before, when something is easier, when clothes are looser. These are all indications that you are moving in the right direction...and you and ONLY YOU can accurately judge that and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with anyone else!
