How to calculate BMI

To calculate your own BMI you use a different calculation depending on whether you are going to be using your height in meters or inches and your weight in pounds or kilograms. For this example, let's assume that your weight will be weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. So, if your weight is 65 kilos and your height 1.5 metres, then you divide your weight, 65, by 1.25 (which is 1.5 squared).

For using pounds and inches you take your weight in pounds and divide by your height squared and then multiply the answer by 703. Both of these methods of calculating BMI will give you exactly the same result.

Once you get the final number, you have to see where you fit in the range of values on a chart. The chart values will indicate that a certain figure is under weight, in the normal range, in the overweight range or the worst case scenario - in the obese range.

Body Mass Index is commonly used as an indicator of obesity. However, it is far from perfect and there are important factors that should also be taken into account. These factors are sex, race, age and body type. Different BMI values are healthy depending on your age, race, sex and body type. Therefore, you should take these into account also. Here's my view on the subject:

Many people believe that taking a pill will solve all their weight loss problems. They buy the latest "miracle drug" or "miracle supplement" and they expect that to help them lose weight without lifting a finger.

This approach doesn't work. How many times have you taken such a pill and you lost weight and kept it off without eating properly or exercising?

What's that? Never? So I thought. I rest my case...

What you need to be doing is focus on the "crucial few" rather than on the "trivial many". Supplements are the triavial many. Proper exercise and basic nutrition are the crucial few - so make sure you have these down first.

I have used several fat loss supplements in the past. Some of them worked, some didn't. Different ones will work for different people so I can't recommend any specific brand at this point. In any case, don't expect to "lose 40 pounds of fat in 2 short weeks" - I don't care what the advertisements in the fitness magazines say.

Buying and using a fat-loss supplement may help in another way that most people don't think of: When you think you have purchased the best fat loss supplement in the world, then you also tend to make better nutrition decisions and stick to your exercise program. You say "Ok, I have paid money for this product: I may as well pay attention to my nutrition and exercise program so that I get the most bang for my buck". Using a fat loss product can give you that much more assurance that you are "firing on all cylinders".

But again: This is the last thing you need to worry about. People were losing weight and looking great ages before the first fat loss supplement was even commercially available...

"How can I stay on my exercise program even if I'm not seeing results right away?"

Here's my answer:

Seeing quick results is extremely important because, let's face it, nobody wants to try hard without getting any results. Our brain needs positive feedback in order to believe that the weight loss program you are following is actually "worth it".

If you exercise and eat right for a week - and then you see that you lost weight and fat, that would be great motivation for you to stay on your weight loss program. If you see no results, chances are you'll just stop the following plan.

You said that you may not be seeing results right away. By "results" I assume you mean losing weight. But remember that you may be gaining muscle and losing fat. So, although the scale doesn't change much, your body composition does. And ultimately, that's what the game is all about...

If you haven't measured how much fat you have before you start your weight loss program, the scale can be really misleading. Sometimes, just seeing how your clothes fit on you may be a much more accurate method of watching your progress...

Are you getting stronger and do you have more endurance every workout? If yes, then you are on track and you are already getting "results". Keep a "training log." Have a notepad with you and note down the exercises you do, how many reps you do, how much weight you lift etc. Every time you try to work out, look at the logs of your earlier workout. Can you do better this time? Can you lift some more weight or do a couple more reps? then you are moving forward...

How do you feel? Do you feel stronger? Do you have more energy? Do you feel "tighter" all over your body? These are also good signs that you are moving in the right direction...

Try to measure your weight AND fat percentage, say once a week. Do it in the morning on an empty stomach. You may see that you have lost just "a little" fat and you have gained just "a little" muscle. But Rome wasn't built in a day. The way you climb a mountain is one step at a time.

There's a lot to be said about consistency and there's strength in numbers. Small improvements add up over time with TREMENDOUS results. It's what the Japanese call "Kaizen"...

How Much Should You Weigh? Calculating Your Healthy Weight

To calculate your BMI, follow these steps:

STEP 2 : Your Weight Figure | Measure your weight in kilograms (eg: 70kg)

STEP 3 : Your BMI | To calculate your BMI, divide your Weight Figure by your Height Figure (example: 70 divided by 2.89 = 24.22)

Then check your BMI against the standard BMI ranges as follows:
Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
Ideal Weight: BMI 18.5-25
Overweight: BMI 25-30
Obese: BMI 30-40
Very Obese: BMI greater than 40
If your BMI falls outside the Ideal Weight range, you may need to look further into your particular weight issue, whether it is to reduce your weight or possibly to put on a few pounds. The Normal Way: Height-Weight Relationship

Physical health can be measured through the appropriateness of a person?s weight to his height; where the body weight refers to the measure of one?s heaviness, and the height is the measure of his tallness.

For instance, a woman measuring 5 ft high (1.52 m), with a medium body frame should weigh between 103 lbs to 115 lbs (46.72 kg ? 52.16 kg) to be considered healthy.

Another example: a man standing 5 ft 8 in (1.72 m) tall, with a large body frame is healthy if he is weighing between 144 lbs ? 163 lbs (65.32 kg ? 73.94 kg). Otherwise, if their weight is lower than the desired body weight for their height, they are considered underweight, and if, in turn, their weight is higher than the desired body weight for their height, they are said to be overweight.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index is an accurate indicator of surplus body fat than kilos or pounds. It is a mathematical ratio of height to weight that can be linked with body composition (or body fat percentage) and with indices of health risk.

Calculating BMI is as follows:

BMI = Weight (in kg)/Height (in m)?
or
BMI = Weight (in lbs) x 700/Height (in inches)?

For example, the calculation for someone weighing 80 kg (176 lbs) and 1.60 m (63 in) tall is:

BMI = 80/160? = 31.2
or
BMI = 176 x 700/63?= 31.1

People with a BMI of 25.1 to 29.9 are considered overweight, and people with a BMI of 30 or above are considered obese. Thus, from the example above, a person weighing 80 kg and is 1.60 m tall is obese. A high BMI assumes a higher percentage of body fat, which places a person at greater risk for developing chronic diseases and other serious illnesses.

BMI and Weight Category:

Under 19: Underweight
20-25: Normal (Healthy)
26-30: Overweight
30 above: Obese

However, for some people, the BMI is not a reliable indication of health. A highly muscled individual who is very fit and healthy may have a somewhat heavy body weight because muscles pack on a lot of pounds. This person may have a high BMI that improperly puts him or her in the overweight or obese categories.

Likewise, thin individuals who have a low body weight with very little muscle and a higher percentage of fat may have a normal BMI, which would be an incorrect indication of healthiness.

How To Determine Your Ideal Weight

We can deduce that while excess fat isn't healthy, fat is also not necessarily a bad thing. Without some fat in our diet, the body won't make nerve cells and hormones or absorb some of the fat soluble vitamins. Okay, so how can you determine your ideal weight? Just how much fat and how many calories should you consume to reach and maintain a healthy weight?

One answer won't work for everybody. So you need to do some figuring to determine how much fat and how many calories you can have. First, you need to determine your ideal weight. There are many different charts and some people use fat calipers and body fat testing to determine exact body fat levels. While your exact weight may depend on how much muscle mass you have here is a simple method to determine what that weight should be:

For Women

The ideal weight for a woman who is exactly 5 feet tall is 100 pounds. For every additional inch above 5 feet, add five pounds. If you are shorter than 5 feet tall, subtract five pounds for every inch you measure below 5 feet.

Next, determine whether you have a small, medium or large frame. Using a measuring tape, measure your wrist. If your wrist measures exactly 6 inches, you have a medium frame and the weight number you calculated above, does not need to be adjusted. If your wrist measures less than 6 inches, subtract 10 percent from your ideal weight. If your wrist measures more than 6 inches, add 10 percent to your ideal weight.

For Men

The ideal weight for a man who is exactly 5 feet tall is 106 pounds. For every additional inch above 5 feet, add 6 pounds. To determine whether you have a small, medium or large frame, measure your wrist. If your wrist measures exactly 7 inches, you have a medium frame and you do not need to adjust your ideal weight. If your wrist is smaller than 7 inches, you have a small frame and should subtract 10 percent from your ideal weight. If your wrist is larger than 7 inches, you have a large frame and should add 10 percent to your ideal weight. For men especially this figure may fluctuate a little or a lot if you are into bodybuilding, but these recommended weights are very close for the average person.

Avoid weighing yourself every single day, it'll just dent your weight loss motivation and frustrate you. Instead, pick one day a week to weigh yourself and weigh yourself every week at the same time (I usually recommend Monday's as you may be at your heaviest after any weekend excesses!).

Tip 3 - Watch the inches, not the pounds

Often weight loss isn't immediately noticeable through weight, but is more obvious through inches lost. So, measure your chest, waist, hips and thighs and record the results so you can track them over time.

Tip 4 - Track your results

Motivation comes from seeing regular results, so track your weight loss successes and your measurements shrinking. This will ensure you are more motivated to lose weight.

Tip 5 - Eat regularly, avoid starving yourself

The majority of dieters think that they can skip meals to lose weight faster. STOP IT! It doesn't work like that. If you skip meals then your body is going to think there's a famine on the way, which means your body starts to piles on the fat to ensure you survive the famine. Eat regular healthy meals and you'll find your diet much easier.

Tip 6 - Don't Deny Yourself

Many dieters will deny themselves anything nice such as chocolate, cakes, etc. Trouble is, when you deny yourself something, you want it even more. So instead CHOOSE not to have it, because then you are in control and don't feel those uncontrolable urges. Occasionally, you may choose to have a treat, which is great too, because you deserve it.

Tip 7 - Drink, drink, drink

And no, I don't mean alcohol. I mean yummy, delicious water. Drink plenty of it as it will flush toxins from your system and help keep you healthy.

Are You Trying To Lose Weight? Don't!

Are you trying to lose weight?

If you are, STOP!

Funny thing to say coming from someone that wants to help you lose all the weight you want, right?

Actually, there's a good reason.

You see, you can't try to lose weight. Don't believe me?

OK, let's use an example. Look around where you are sitting right now and find a small object. Perhaps a pen, envelope or book. Got it?

Now, try to pick it up. Go ahead.

Is it in your hand? If it is, well, then you didn't try, you actually picked it up. If it's not in your hand, you didn't.

Simple, right?

There's no middle ground in doing. You can't "try" to do anything, it's a fallacy. You either do it, or don't do it.

The same applies to losing weight (or anything else for that matter). Saying that you'll try gives your mind fuzzy instructions, and it will return fuzzy results, results that aren't what you really want. It also gives you a "way out" if you don't achieve the goals you set out to reach.

You see, your subconscious mind doesn't interpret your directions, it just goes to work following them as complete truth. When you say you'll "try to lose weight", it will "try" to follow your instructions, which we now know is impossible.

What in fact you want, (if you really do) is to lose weight. To feel better. To have more energy. To overcome health challenges. To look great.

Now, if you say you want to lose weight and are not successful, or continue to use language that includes words like "try" or "we'll see" or "maybe", perhaps you're wired backwards.

What does that mean? Well, maybe you say that you want to lose weight, but your mind says it doesn't. Somewhere along the way you gave your mind instructions that it's too hard, or impossible, to lose the weight you want. Perhaps you're more comfortable where you are now, but know that it's the right thing to say that you want to lose weight.

If this is the case, ask yourself what beliefs you hold that are at odds with what you want. For example, "it's too hard to lose weight", "it's impossible to lose weight", "I can't lose weight because I'd have to exercise all the time", "I'll lose my friends if I lose weight", "I can't lose weight because I've always failed".

Ask yourself if in fact they are true. Are they making your life easier, or more difficult? Do these beliefs serve you or harm you?

Then, replace the old beliefs with new ones. Positive, confident statements about how you want to look and feel.

The best way to lose weight is to avoid saying you'll "try" to lose weight, and say you "will" lose weight. See yourself at your ideal weight. Imagine how great you look and feel. Use positive language and give your mind specific instructions like "I'm now happily at my ideal weight of (number of pounds) weight" or "I now happily choose to wear a size (your ideal size)".

Watch your language and self talk closely and avoid using "try". It may take constant attention at the beginning, but after a short time, you'll get used to keeping your language positive, upbeat and confident.

Your weight loss results will follow immediately, depending on how confident, committed and persistent you are in applying these exercises. The more confident, committed and persistent, the faster your results will appear.

How nice to walk up stairs without getting out of breath. But if you want to lose weight you had better know the reasons behind it or you are setting yourself up to fail. Be warned that if you are going to lose weight for the wrong reasons, like many others before you, there's a good chance that either your diet will fail or that you will put theweight back on after your diet is over.
