Correct Weight for Height

A lot of people ask what their weight should be, based on their height. People believe that for a given height, there should be a corresponding correct body weight. Unfortunately, there is no way of assessing an ideal weight for a given height. But one can very easily assess, measure and achieve an ideal body shape for a given height.

Weight Loss is Misleading

Most people know that all their weight loss should be fat loss. Yet most people do not realize that all of their weight loss may not necessarily be attributed to fat loss. When one loses weight, some of the weight loss could be attributed to fat loss. The rest of it could be attributed to muscle loss and water loss. Muscle and water loss is of no use to someone wanting a better or well defined body. Muscle loss causes the metabolism to be sluggish and sets one up for rebound weight gain. Water loss is temporary as the body will very quickly recoup water losses.

The Obsession with the Weighing Scales

The weighing scales rule the lives of countless people. A lot of people pay homage to the weight scales first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, the obsession with the weight scales leads to a lack of fulfillment. This is because monitoring weight alone can never lead to a beautiful or well-defined body.

Weight Loss or a Well Defined Body Shape

Everyone is able to appreciate a perfect body when they see one. Be it the hourglass shape of a woman or the “V” shaped body of a man, one is able to appreciate a beautiful and well-defined body. While we have a visual impression of what a beautiful body should look, we are not thought of how to correctly measure it.

Weight Scales is a Flawed Means to Measure a Well Defined Body

We are brought up thinking that the only way to get the body of our dreams is by losing weight. Unfortunately, the weight scale is a faulty tool for achieving this goal. As mentioned earlier, there is no way of knowing what proportion of your weight loss is attributed to fat loss.

Measuring the Waist to Hip Ratio for Women

A simpler yet crude means of assessing a well-defined body for a woman is by measuring her waist to hip ratio (WHR). A waist to hip ratio of 0.7 is considered to be the ideal hourglass shape.

Measuring the Shoulder to Waist Ratio for Men

A crude assessment for measuring a “V” shaped body for men is by measuring the shoulder to hip ratio. A shoulder to waist ratio of 0.8 yields an attractive “V” shaped body.

Measuring % Body Fat

The most accurate means of measuring a well-defined body is by measuring % body fat. This can be done with a pair of calipers. It essentially measures what percentage of your body weight is fat. As your % body fat reduces, you can be rest assured that you are moving towards your dream body.

A man can have a very attractive body at 10-14% body fat. Most men will start showing off a 6-pack at 12% body fat and below. A woman can have a very attractive and sexy body at 20 % body fat and below. A woman can start showing off her 6-pack at 16% body fat and below.

What is the Correct Weight for Your Height

As mentioned earlier, blindly monitoring weight loss does not yield a well-defined body. Using weight loss to achieve a well-defined body can be likened to climbing a ladder all the way to the top only to realize that it is placed against the wrong wall.

As such, there is no such thing as a correct weight for a given height. This is a wrong measurement and will not yield the desired results. Instead people should focus on measuring the body ratios for a crude assessment of body shape. Alternatively, an accurate assessment could be attained by measuring % body fat. The ratios and the % body fat ,work independently of the height and are applicable for a short person as well as a tall person.
