The Secret of Permanent Weight Loss

Most people do one of two things when faced with a weight problem. We look for ways to by-pass the problem by looking for quick fix solutions. Alternatively, we repress the problem by trying to ignore it or put the blame on things that we claim are beyond our control such as genetics, hectic schedule etc

Both the above happen because we lack real deep understanding of “why” we want to achieve a particular weight goal. This “why” is made up of 2 parts namely the utilitarian and the non utilitarian parts. The utilitarian part of weight loss is pretty clear such as looking good, feeling energetic, being healthy and living a long life.

The Non-Utilitarian Part of Weight Loss

The non utilitarian part of weight loss may not be that clear at first. These includes love, truth, compassion and joy. Now most of us would probably be asking what has love, truth, compassion and joy got to do with sustainable weight loss. Looking at it superficially we probably will not see the relationship but if we take the trouble to find a deeper understanding, things start to become clearer.

Love and Weight Loss

Lets take love for instance. We all know that we cannot give what we do not have and this also applies for love. So we must love ourselves and that means taking care of ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. If deep down we do not genuinely love ourselves, this may become a potential barrier to correct weight loss. The earlier blog on the 4 levels of love elaborates this point well.

Understanding Weight Loss

Truth is another area that is largely neglected because understanding truth requires effort. Henry Ford rightfully pointed out that “thinking is the most difficult task, that is why so few people do it”. There is tremendous benefit in a deep understanding about the truth of correct weight loss because it leads to effortless self-discipline which is sustainable. For example a 1-year-old has to be prevented from sticking his finger into the wall power point because he lacks an understanding of its risk. However an adult displays effortless self-discipline because of deeper understanding of the risks of sticking his finger into the wall power point. The 1-year-old may not like being prevented because it is an externally induced discipline but this is not the case for the adult. The fundamental difference is externally induced discipline is a form of prison which is usually not sustainable but effortless self-discipline that grows from deep understanding is a form of freedom and is usually sustainable. So if we want to make self-discipline more effortless and therefore more sustainable, spend some time understanding the truth about correct weight loss.

Compassion

If we have compassion than we are able to place ourself in the other person’s position. We can feel the emotional and financial strain that our loved ones may have to go through should our health be compromised due to being overweight. We can feel the sadness that our children feel because we cannot run and play with them.

There is a kind of joy in accomplishing a task through our own effort which no quick fix or repression can ever bring. We start believing and respecting ourself. There is also joy in knowing that by our efforts, we are becoming a source of comfort for our loved ones by being healthy and energetic.

Make a Life, Not a Living

For some of us, just knowing the utilitarian part of why we need to lose weight is adequate to get into action and maintain them. However for the rest of us knowing the utilitarian and the non utilitarian parts help in moving us to action. The utilitarian part helps us make a living but it is the non utilitarian part that helps us make a life.

Instead people should focus on measuring the body ratios for a crude assessment of body shape. Alternatively, an accurate assessment could be attained by measuring % body fat. The ratios and the % body fat ,work independently of the height and are applicable for a short person as well as a tall person.

Weight Loss Success Tip - Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Every person is different: their goals, their bodies, their health requirements, their tastes, their lives, etc, etc, etc. Comparing ourselves to others does not do us any favors-nor does it help the other person we are comparing ourselves to! Let's learn to take stock of our situation and figure out where we want to go from here...independent of where others are and where others think we should go. This is a good philosophy for every aspect of our lives including our weight loss goals!

This has been a huge challenge for me...one that I share with many people on oh, so many fronts. It seems that we never feel we are smart enough, talented enough, funny enough, rich enough, pretty enough, and of course not nearly thin enough.

This "not enough" feeling...no matter what the feeling is about...is a feeling of lack...of not measuring up. How do we get this sort of feeling? By comparing ourselves to someone else who we BELIEVE is better or "more than" we are.

The truth is we have no way of really knowing what that other person has going on in their lives. As it turns out almost everyone has a feeling of being less than-about SOMETHING in their lives. Even many supermodels, people who are paid lots of money because of their looks, believe they are not beautiful enough. Gee whiz, if they aren't beautiful enough, what hope do we mere mortals have?

We are born knowing we are beautiful, that we are enough...babies radiate that and as adults we feel and see it in them. But somewhere along the path of growing up, we got the message that we weren't enough...this isn't about blaming anyone for giving us that message...it is just about acknowledging that somehow we internalized the message. If we want to regain our health then we have to change that message-no matter how it got there in the first place-and we don't change the message by looking outside ourselves...we must look inside...we must change our mindset to achieve weight loss.

If your goal is to be a healthier person in 2010, then it is important that you keep that intention and take steps to achieve it...and the first and most important steps are in your mind, not in finding the right diet, pill, or exercise routine.

In our competitive society it is common for people to attach a number to that success...losing "x" pounds, reaching a goal weight "Z", even reaching that weight faster than anyone else. This is looking outside yourself to judge your success.

Instead of buying into that notion, focus on YOU. Why do you want to be healthier? What does being healthier look like for you? What will this enable you to do? How will you feel? Develop a mental picture of what you will look like healthier...not what some chart says you should weigh...and see yourself doing the things that are important to you. See yourself living your life, enjoying the people in your life, the activities that you enjoy.

Now as you move forward, judge your progress based on YOU...not someone else. Celebrate when you feel your energy is higher, when you notice you can do something you couldn't before, when something is easier, when clothes are looser. These are all indications that you are moving in the right direction...and you and ONLY YOU can accurately judge that and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with anyone else!

Water Contains Zero Calories

Because the calorie-content of water is zero, drinking water instead of milk, fruit juices or regular sodas helps to lower the calorie content of your diet and thus helps weight reduction. That said, water contains no nutrition either. By comparison, soft drinks like milk and fruit juice have significant nutritional content. Food List For South Beach Diet: Working Your Way Through The Program

The South Beach Diet is one of the favorite diet programs for people who would like to lose weight. Dr. Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist, has formulated it. It is claimed that the food list for South Beach diet can help you lose weight from 8 to 13 pounds in the span of two weeks. This two-week span is just for the first phase of the program.

Principles of South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet is a diet that focuses on the intake of carbohydrates and fats. The diet has three stages. Each stage is called a phase. The first two phases introduces the gradual changes in your diet while the third phase is the diet that you will use for maintenance after going through the first two phases.

The South Beach Diet is a program where you are allowed to eat three meals a day with two snacks in between the meals. It aims to transform your eating habits from eating bad carbohydrates to eating good carbohydrates.

Phases of the South Beach Diet

As previously mentioned, the South Beach Diet has three phases.

Phase 1 is the start of the program. The Phase 1 stage will run for two weeks. During this span of time, you are allowed to eat three times a day with regular servings. Your food will not be measured at all. But in this phase, all forms of carbohydrate are not allowed. There will be a total absence of carbohydrates for a span of two weeks.

The food list for this phase includes meat like chicken and turkey - ensure that these meats are skinless. All meat should be lean meat like tenderloin and sirloin. Peanuts and pistachios nuts are also acceptable. Fishes, any type of it, are also acceptable.

Eggs and cheese plus oils like canola and olive oils are also allowed in the Phase 1 diet. Green vegetables like salads, cucumbers and broccoli are permitted. In addition to these, make sure that you drink lots of water to help in the metabolism of fats.

On the other hand, the following are excluded from the food list for this phase: red meat like rib steaks or honey-baked ham; dairy products other than low fat cheeses - examples are yogurt, ice cream, whole milk, low-fat milk and soy milk; vegetables with pure carbohydrates, such as potatoes, corn and carrots. All types of fruits, alcohol, starchy foods and sweets should also be avoided. Starchy food includes all pasta, rice, oatmeal and bread. Sweets, on the other hand, include candies, ice cream, cakes and cookies.

Phase 2 Food List for South Beach Diet

Phase 2 stage is a breather as compared with Phase 1. Under Phase 2, the goal of the program is to reintroduce carbohydrates. This time, you are only allowed to eat good carbohydrates. There are some people who stay longer than two weeks in Phase 1 but it is not recommended.

Phase 2 of the South Beach diet has a slower rate of weight reduction. It will only take off 1 to 2 pounds per week. There is no definite span of time for this phase. You can stay in this phase for as long as it takes to reach your ideal weight.

The foods that are allowed on this phase are the same with the foods that are allowed in Phase 1, plus some that are added. The additional Phase 2 food list for South Beach diet includes: fruits and milk, which are fat-free, like non-fat milk and soymilk. In Phase 2, you are allowed to eat whole grain starches and barley. A little alcohol is allowed, in the form of red wine.

Others carbohydrate-rich foods are also allowed but should be taken moderately. These are potatoes, carrots, beets and refined wheat baked goods. Fruits like bananas, watermelon and pineapple can be eaten sparingly.

Phase 3 Food List for South Beach Diet

This phase is for weight maintenance. This phase can last for a lifetime if you wish. Once you have achieved the weight that you desire, you will now just continue your current diet program.

For this phase, all food categories are allowed, but make sure that you only eat foods with good carbohydrates and with low glycemic index. Refrain from eating processed foods that contain lots of bad carbs and bad fats.

The food list for South Beach Diet is not that difficult to implement and this diet program is one of the most feasible among the many diet plans out there. You will just have to adhere and follow the restrictions to be able to maintain the weight that you have been dreaming of.
